The Future of Civil Society and the role of Funders

The Future of Civil Society and the role of Funders

We all make up civil society; when we act as individuals or collectively outside of the state and the market to enrich each other’s lives.

Over the last 18 months to 2 years, an independent Commission inquiring into the future of civil society ran a series of activities and events to consult, get feedback and receive evidence on the future of civil society. A report of its findings offers a shared understanding of what the future might hold, and the role of civil society in shaping it. At the same time, the Government has undertaken a review of civil society by consulting and getting feedback from a range of stakeholders to help inform its future strategy, which it launched in the Autumn 2018. The strategy outlines what the Government can do to bring together the resources, policies and people who, between them, can build a stronger civil society.

In this context we have invited Asif Afridi, a formal panel member of the independent commission on the future of civil society to provide an overview of the findings on the trends that are shaping civil society and what this means for the future of civil society. We have also invited Jess Middleton, BBC Children in Need, who will share her learning from a study visit to USA that offers some interesting thoughts on how funders play a role in shaping civil society.

The purpose of the workshop is to offer the opportunity for funder:

To reflect on their role and practices in shaping civil society:

What can be learnt from the findings of the Independent commission’s work,

and how this can be reflected in the approach and practice of funders in supporting civil society.
