About the event

KAYLEIGH GARTHWAITE: HUNGER INC.
Join KAYLEIGH GARTHWAITE as she outlines the ideas in her new book HUNGER INC.: BUILDING SOLIDARITY BEYOND THE FOOD BANK.

About this Event

Join prize-winning writer & academic KAYLEIGH GARTHWAITE as she travels across the globe looking at the essential work undertaken by organisations at the heart of the on-going food crisis & outlines how the ideas in her new book HUNGER INC.: BUILDING SOLIDARITY BEYOND THE FOOD BANK can encourage governments to explore radical, community-led alternatives to charitable food aid.

Kayleigh will be joined in this discussion by ALEX DOYLE from Birmingham-based community food provider FOOD JUSTICE NETWORK (FJN).

The event will be chaired by award-winning Birmingham journalist, DAN CAVE.

‘How do you close a food bank – a beacon of what is wrong? By turning it into a shop – preferably a co-op. Kayleigh Garthwaite’s ground-breaking work explains why food banks prolong hunger and what must be done...’ DANNY DORLING

KAYLEIGH GARTHWAITE is Associate Professor in Social Policy at the University of Birmingham, UK. She is the author of the British Academy Peter Townsend Prize-winning ‘Hunger Pains: Life Inside Foodbank Britain’. She co-founded the Global Solidarity Alliance for Food, Health, and Social Justice (GSA), an international collaboration between scholars, NGOs, and grassroots campaigners.

ALEX DOYLE is a facilitator for the Birmingham Food Justice Network (FJN). Emerging from the pandemic, the FJN is a grassroots, non-hierarchical network of over 350 community food provisions working to tackle food insecurity in Birmingham.

This is one of our FUTURES events, dedicated to non-fiction books that help us to rewire our consciousness & zero in on the ideas that help shape the architecture of our collective futures.
