Join Rackham Choir for a performance celebrating the 250th anniversary of American Democracy.
As America approaches this historic milestone, Rackham Choir presents “I, Too, Sing America," a concert dedicated to the diverse voices that compose the true fabric of our country. This production is more than a performance; it is an exploration of our collective journey toward justice, equality, and the hope that America truly is a place for everyone.
This program features a soulful blend of gospel, pop, and R&B rhythms, anchored by two powerful centerpieces: Leonard Bernstein’s iconic Chichester Psalms and the Michigan premiere of Brandon A. Boyd’s Redeem the Dream. Boyd’s work interweaves the Declaration of Independence with Langston Hughes’ poem Let America be America Again, to explore the tensions between our democratic ideals and historical realities, ultimately affirming a collective hope for a future of unity. Bernstein’s piece features the ethereal purity of a boy soprano, intricate percussion, and the majestic sound of the pipe organ. The program also features Rosephanye Powell’s I Dream a Dream and the stirring Wilhousky arrangement of Battle Hymn of the Republic.
