How your Inner Story can help you become a better leader.
Tim proposes that you have two stories inside your head. One is about your life and the other is controlling your life. That story he calls your “Inner Story”. It determines your thoughts emotions and behaviour and what it means to be you. Leadership is an expression of your inner story. Leaders must be self-aware and understand the Inner Story that is being created inside their mind. You will have the opportunity to analyse your personal inner story and to illuminate how it impacts upon many aspects of how you lead, including when you are under pressure.
As a leader you also have to be aware of the inner story of your ‘team’. Every team in sport, business and education that Tim has worked with has spent time identifying and developing its Inner Story. Doing so is a critical lever for understanding shared reality, nourishing wellbeing and improving performance. It does not have to be bad to get better. Tim will help you to analyse the current Inner Story of your team, reflect on how to meet the needs of every team member and identify ways of creating the culture that you want in your school.
If you are a leader or an aspiring leader, join Tim for this research-informed session. Understand the psychology of what is going on inside your head as a leader, inside your team and apply this knowledge to support you in rising to the challenges that you face.
Dr Tim O’Brien is Visiting Fellow in Psychology and Human Development at UCL Institute of Education. He has held leadership positions in mainstream and specialist education. Tim has been first team psychologist for three Premier League football teams, including ten years with Arsenal FC.
