Dyslexia Diagnostic Assessment - City Centre campus
What is a diagnostic assessment?
A diagnostic assessment aims to confirm if you have dyslexia or not. It will provide detailed information about your cognitive profile, strengths and weakness. In some cases other Specific Learning Difficulties can be identified. You should only book a diagnostic assessment if you have been advised to do so by a member of the Enablement Team, following a dyslexia screening carried out here at BCU. If you are not sure, please email ZW5hYmxlbWVudCB8IGJjdSAhIGFjICEgdWs=.
What is the aim of a diagnostic assessment?
The aim of the assessment process is to investigate factors which may be affecting how you learn and identify whether there is a clear discrepancy between your general level of ability and your reading and writing attainment.
How long will the assessment take?
The assessment will take around 2.5 to 3 hours to complete depending upon the type and level of difficulties you experience. The completed report will be sent to you within 15 working days.
What happens during the assessment process?
The assessment process usually starts with an informal chat with you regarding some background information and then we carry out the diagnostic assessment.
Up-to date age appropriate standardised tests will be administered to investigate aspects of reading, writing, spelling, and phonological awareness, speed of processing and memory and fine motor skills.
At the end of the assessment you will be given feedback on your performance but you will not be told at this point whether you have dyslexia or not. This is because the assessor will need to calculate the scores and analyse overall performance. The completed report will contain the results of your performance and a diagnosis.
A link to a pre-assessment questionnaire will be in the confirmation email you will receive upon booking your appointment. Please complete this questionnaire electronically and send this to ZW5hYmxlbWVudCB8IGJjdSAhIGFjICEgdWs= as soon as possible. Please ensure you complete the pre-assessment questionnaire as this will provide key background information and alert the assessor to any co-occurring difficulties.
