Co-Lab: Trip to Birmingham

Co-Lab: Trip to Birmingham

*For Loughborough University students only*

This trip is designed for students from any discipline interested in learning more about the ways in which you might find work; and sustain and challenge yourself as an artist or creative worker. How do you get a studio? How do you get paid? How do you develop networks for solidarity, advice and friendship? Who commissions you? How do you work with institutions, and with non-artistic disciplines? We’ll also see some excellent art at some of the UK’s best contemporary art galleries. The trip is scheduled to include visits to:

IKON, to visit Haroon Mirza's reality is somehow what we expect it to be and Matthew Krishanu's A M**der of Crows

BOM, where we’ll hear about how they work with artists, scientists and technologists; how they’ve made their venue autism-friendly; and visit their show We Run This, which features the work of non-binary people and women of colour and artists working in the digital medium.

Eastside Projects, to see their show The Range, which features work by some of the UK’s most exciting contemporary artists; and to hear about how they support artists at all career stages through their ESP programme.

Grand Union, to explore how they provide studios for artists at various stages of their careers, commission shows, and meet some of their resident artists.

David Bell, Radar’s Programme Co-Ordinator, will also be on the trip and will be happy to answer questions about his experiences working as a freelance artist, and working in an academic environment.

There’s a £3 deposit for the trip (refunded if you attend), which covers travel and the visits. Lunch and refreshments are not included, but time will be built in to pick them up. We’ll leave Loughborough University at 9am and return for approximately 6.30pm.

The day will involve a fair amount of walking (approximately 2 miles between galleries, spread out over the day). If you have any specific access needs please let us know at the time of booking.
