Birmingham Artwalk is happening throughout Friday and Saturday, filling downtown with visual art, music, makers and people creating things. Somewhere in the middle of all of that, I get to host our Poetry + Songwriter Showcase for the third year. And this lineup feels special. I didn’t want a stage where everybody sounded the same. I wanted something that actually felt like an art walk: poetry beside folk songs, younger voices beside artists with decades behind them, quiet moments beside a full band, familiar faces beside somebody you may discover completely by accident. These are people making their own work and having the courage to share it. FRIDAY • SEPTEMBER 11 OUR SHOWCASE: 6:30–9:30 PM JERIJANNEICE WALKER • POET Jerijanneice brings a voice rooted in real life, creativity and community. Her art comes from somewhere personal, and that matters to me. I love beginning this weekend with the reminder that sometimes we create because there are things inside us that need somewhere to go. I’m excited to give her a microphone and let the words speak for themselves. JAEDEN • POET Jaeden brings a younger poetic voice to the showcase, and I really wanted that perspective represented. Art shouldn’t wait until somebody has years of accomplishments before we decide they’re worth listening to. Part of Artwalk is discovery, and I love putting a newer voice beside writers and musicians from completely different generations. GUNTRAM I’ll be hosting both days and playing some originals along the way. My songs wander around dream-folk, psychedelic and atmospheric folk, indie music and singer-songwriter territory. I write about love, grief, family, childhood, time, dreams, hope and all the strange questions that come with being alive. I’m less concerned these days with what genre something belongs to. I mostly want to make music that feels true when I sing it. ED POWELL Ed brings some dirt under the fingernails to this lineup. He’s a storyteller with songs that feel lived-in instead of polished smooth. There are roots and rhythm underneath what he does, but it’s the directness I like most. It feels like somebody sitting down and telling you something because they actually have something to tell. ANTHONY NELSON Anthony brings another completely different songwriting voice into Friday. That variety is intentional. I want the feeling of the stage to change every time somebody new walks up. Anthony gets his own little piece of Artwalk to introduce himself the best way a songwriter can: through his songs. ROBERT HUFFMAN Robert carries a remarkable piece of Alabama music history with him. From the wonderfully difficult-to-categorize Club Wig to Birmingham instrumental group The High Fidelics, his musical life has moved through funk, rock, surf, R&B, punk, psychedelia and plenty of territory between. What I appreciate most is simple: Robert is still doing it. Still playing. Still creating. Still showing up for original music. There’s something beautiful about putting decades of musical life on the same stage as artists who are only beginning to discover where theirs might lead. CJ FAGAN CJ writes toward the complicated stuff: identity, belief, change and the things going on underneath the surface. There’s a growing body of original music behind CJ already, and I love watching an artist while the story is still unfolding. These showcases aren’t only about celebrating finished stories. Sometimes you get to hear an artist while they’re still discovering where the songs are taking them. ANDREW CARPENTER Andrew is another songwriter I’m really happy to add to Friday. His presence makes this already varied night stretch a little wider, which is exactly what I want. There’s something special about giving an original songwriter a short window where the room belongs completely to their songs. No covers people already recognize and no expectations about what comes next. Just a person, their music and an audience meeting somewhere in the middle. Andrew gets to add another musical voice and another perspective to an evening built around exactly that kind of discovery. AMERICANA’S GRANDSON There’s something timeless about Americana’s Grandson. The music reaches toward Southern storytelling, folk, country blues and older American traditions without treating them like museum pieces. Underneath it are family, memory, place and the idea that ordinary lives deserve songs too. It feels handmade, which makes it especially at home at Artwalk. GALACTIC GOTH And then we get weird. I mean that entirely as a compliment. Galactic Goth brings a darker, stranger and more experimental corner of Birmingham music into the evening. I specifically wanted something that would push against what people expect from the words “songwriter showcase.” Original music should be allowed to surprise you. After poetry, folk songs and storytelling, Galactic Goth gets to open a trapdoor in the floor. SATURDAY • SEPTEMBER 12 OUR SHOWCASE: 2:30–5:30 PM MIRIAM CALLEJA SHAW • POET Originally from Malta and now part of Birmingham’s literary community, Miriam brings an international life in poetry, translation, art and teaching to our stage. Her work can be quiet and intimate while reaching toward much bigger things: memory, identity, place and human connection. In the middle of a busy Artwalk afternoon, I love the thought of people becoming quiet for a few minutes just to listen to her. MERRILL LEE GIRARDEAU • POET Merrill is a poet, writer and educator whose work has explored dreams, surrealism and redemption. She understands something songwriters know too: words already have music before anyone puts chords underneath them. Her work feels especially right surrounded by visual art, where everybody is attempting the same impossible thing in a different language: taking something from inside yourself and finding a way to let somebody else experience it. GUNTRAM I’ll be back Saturday with another handful of songs and hosting this beautiful little circus. Putting songwriter nights together has convinced me that Birmingham doesn’t have a shortage of original artists. We just need more places where people can actually hear them. I hope this stage can be one of those places. JAKE HORNSBY + SMOKE HILL Jake isn’t coming alone. He’s bringing Smoke Hill. I’m especially excited about this because Saturday gets a real full-band moment. We’ll move from poetry and intimate songwriting into something bigger, louder and more dynamic. Instead of shrinking Jake’s songs down to fit the showcase, we get to hear them breathe through the musicians he makes music with. A human voice can hold a crowd completely still, and twenty minutes later a band can change the entire air around it. That contrast is Artwalk. NICK T. Nick represents something people don’t always see about a local music community. He has been part of these events as a musician and as somebody willing to help make things happen behind the scenes. Communities aren’t built only by whoever happens to be holding the microphone. Saturday, Nick gets to step up to it and let us hear his own music. RUSTY RUSS Rusty isn’t simply looking for places to play his own songs. He’s also actively helping create places for other songwriters to be heard through SoundBox Writers Rounds and his involvement in Birmingham’s original-music community. His own music carries roots, blues, grit, humor and lived experience. Rusty understands that sometimes knowing where a song came from makes hearing it mean even more. KRISTIN WILKS Kristin represents one of my favorite parts of doing something like this: discovery. You shouldn’t need a giant biography or thousands of followers before people decide your art deserves a few minutes of their attention. Sometimes the best introduction to a songwriter is simply standing there while they play. Kristin brings her own songs and personality into Saturday, and I’m excited for people to meet her through the music. SKYLAR PHILLIPS Skylar is a thoughtful songwriter I’ve really enjoyed bringing into these shows. There’s a searching quality to the writing that rewards actually listening, and I love watching an artist develop their own musical voice in real time. Original songs first, people first, and enough room for the music to grow. That’s what I want these showcases to encourage. JD SCOTT JD brings another turn in the road and another perspective on what a song can be. There’s something special about hearing somebody’s original music before you have any memories attached to it. You don’t know the chorus. You don’t know the words. You don’t know what comes next. For a few minutes, everybody listening gets to experience that song at the beginning. BLAIR DULUOZ Blair might be one of the easiest people on this lineup to recognize after thirty seconds and one of the hardest to adequately describe. Acoustic guitar. Harmonica. Originals. Traditional songs. Folk and blues wandering into something that sounds like it may have hitchhiked here from another century. Blair once described her sound as “time-worn sidewalks, rusted locks, and broken watches” with a dash of oregano. That’s probably better than any genre I could give you. Blair sounds like Blair, and that may be the highest goal for any original artist. WHY I WANT YOU TO COME Because underneath all these names, genres and descriptions, this whole thing is actually very simple: People made these things. Someone lived through something and eventually it became a song. Someone woke from a dream and wrote it down. Someone found three chords that somehow said what ordinary conversation couldn’t. Someone stared at a blank page until a poem appeared. Someone made a painting that had never existed before. And then they all did the slightly terrifying thing of sharing it with strangers. That is what I love about Birmingham Artwalk. So come downtown and make a day of it. Artwalk is happening throughout both Friday and Saturday. Wander through the art. Meet the people who made it. Buy something directly from an artist if you can. Eat something good. Bring your friends. Bring your family. Stop when you hear something coming from a stage. And when it’s time for our showcase, come spend a little while with us. You don’t need to know every name on this flyer. That’s the point. Come because you know one artist and maybe leave talking about somebody whose name you had never heard before. That’s how an arts community grows. I’m incredibly grateful to Birmingham Artwalk for trusting me with this little corner of the weekend for a third year, and I’m grateful to every poet, songwriter and musician who said yes.
