An Evening with Alex Hibbert in Birmingham
Join us for an evening with Alex Hibbert, author of Polar Eskimo.
In December of 2013, Alex Hibbert led an international quartet of polar explorers to the extreme north of Arctic Greenland. After a huge storm destroyed their intended route to the North Pole in the darkness of winter, instead of retreating, they decided to explore the beautiful but unforgiving region of Avanerriaq – the home of the Polar Eskimos. What followed was six months of harsh education, gripping adventure and…twenty unruly sled dogs.
Polar Eskimo is a triumph of human spirit, cultural openness and of the raw ability to keep a team alive in the unforgiving barren icefields of the polar north. Central to their experience were those who called Avanerriaq home – the Polar Eskimos. In the third critical phase of their modern history, after ‘First Contact’ only two centuries ago and the encroachment of the modern world after the Second World War, this team of twenty-somethings encapsulate the fears, thrills and kindness that living with the most traditional community of Inuit on Earth can provide.
Hibbert takes the reader on a fascinating adventure into a world few will ever see, and most are unaware still even exists. From heart-stopping falls through thin ice into frigid water to the bizarre modern politics of Greenland, his passion for the place, people and wildlife is infectious.
Tickets are £3 and can only be purchased online.
