Program Title

OPERATION WIPE OUT: A Statewide Plan to Eliminate Cervical Cancer as a Public Health Problem in Alabama

As we approach March 8 — International Women’s Day and Zonta Rose Day, this program provides a meaningful opportunity to reflect on how advocacy, prevention, and education directly impact the lives of women across our state. Cervical cancer is one of the few cancers that is highly preventable, yet disparities in access, awareness, and care continue to affect underserved women, particularly in rural communities. This conversation highlights how Alabama is working toward eliminating cervical cancer and how community engagement plays a vital role in that mission.

This topic beautifully reflects the spirit of Zonta Rose Day—honoring women by supporting efforts that protect their health, dignity, and future.

Speaker Bio

Dr. Isabel Scarinci is a behavioral scientist and Professor in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, where she also serves as Director in the Division for Global and Rural Health. She has dedicated her career to cervical cancer prevention and control among underserved populations in rural U.S. and low- and middle-income countries. In addition to her work responsibilities, she is very committed to community service and has served on a number of local boards and organizations. She has been one of the leaders of OPERATION WIPE OUT – a statewide plan to eliminate cervical cancer as a public health problem in Alabama. In 2021, she was chosen as one of six “Champions of Health” worldwide by Rotary International for her work in cervical cancer prevention and control in the U.S. and other low- and middle-income countries.

We encourage members and guests to attend this timely program as we honor women not only in words on March 8, but through awareness and action that improves women’s health across Alabama.
