Camilla Baier -deutsch-brasilianische Programmgestalterin, Kuratorin und Forscherin- wird in den Film einführen. Schwerpunkte ihrer Arbeit sind Archivfilme und feministisches Kino mit einem besonderen Fokus auf lateinamerikanische Filme. Zum Film:
Der ins deutsche etwas holperig-fancy übersetzte Film(titel) „La mujer murciélago“ entstand 1967 im Kontext der Batman-Fernsehserie und des Spielfilms „Batman hält die Welt in Atem“. Er ist ein höchst unterhaltsamer Ausflug in die mexikanische Pulp-Kultur der 1960er-Jahre: Lucha Libre, bizarre Wissenschaft und Superheldinnen-Power prallen aufeinander. In der Rolle der furchtlosen Heldin glänzt Maura Monti als Batwoman aka Gloria, eine Dame aus bestem und reichstem Hause. Wrestlerin, Spionin, Taucherin und Allround-Ikone in Cape, Maske und Bikini. Ihr Gegner: ein gefährlicher Wissenschaftler, der Wrestler für dubiose Experimente entführt. Batwoman kämpft -vollgepackt mit Action, Camp und Charme- stilvoll gegen das Böse!
Und auch abseits der Leinwand zeigte Maura Monti wahre Stärke: Statt im Luxusleben und als Pulpkinostar aufzugehen, ließ sie sich scheiden und schloss sich den Zapatisten als Dorfschullehrerin an.
Camilla Baier schreibt: „The Bat Woman also offers an intriguing lens through which to examine the intersection of gender and genre in Mexican cinema. Here, the luchadora tradition collides with the emerging archetype of the superhero. (…) However you see her, the Bat Woman is a brilliant fantasy character. She is a glamorous, independent single woman, who uses her immense wealth to teach herself extraordinary skills and to fight crime, (…) The Bat Woman shows no interest in romance, has no traumatic back story, and generally just seems to be having a great time, (…).“

Die Restaurierung erfolgte anhand des originalen 35mm-Kameranegativs und Lichttons. Das Projekt wurde 2019 unter der Leitung von Viviana Garcia Besné abgeschlossen. „García Besné’s work is not just about preservation; it’s about reclaiming history. Her efforts to revive Mexican popular cinema challenge the classist preconceptions that have led to these films being historically undervalued.“ DCA
