How wonderful it is to have our five senses and appreciate them fully! Each plays a crucial role in how we experience and interact with the world around us, and if we want to connect fully with Nature and our lives, focusing deeply on each of our five physical senses is a beautiful start.
This series of guided meditations with Rowena Wilson is a perfect opportunity to engage with all aspects of our five senses in a new way. Calmly go within, connect with a different sense each week in January, and enjoy a time of relaxation and inspiration. Applying mindfulness to each will allow us to hone these natural skills in the most delightful, relaxing way.
Science has been demonstrating that we can learn to improve our senses. Growing these abilities is the sort of practice that enables musicians to listen and decipher intricate layers of music others can’t hear, why artists can look deeply and see shades and contours the rest of us miss, and how food tasters and perfumists are able to distinguish between an array of subtleties that others may have no concept of.
These will be detailed meditations on the body that also allow time for full appreciation and a ‘noticing’ of our feelings around them. If you happen to be feeling dismayed or frustrated at the decline of one of your senses, this time can be used to allow yourself to become aware of these emotions with compassion. To give yourself a little relief by softening unnecessary tension and building new neural pathways to a more positive relationship with any changes occurring, while being kind to yourself.
Unlike some of the previous meditations Rowena has led, some of these meditations will be easier to do with your eyes closed, but, as always, you choose what’s comfortable for you. You may sit, lie or stand as suits your body best. For added benefit, we may suggest items that you might sit with for some of these by emailing you before each date:
