Info: This session explores the importance of monitoring end-tidal carbon dioxide (EtCO₂) during sedation and anaesthesia. It covers what EtCO₂ is, how it is monitored, and lessons from critical incidents where misinterpretation led to harm. Key topics include waveform capnography for airway management, confirming tracheal tube placement, and preventing unrecognised oesophageal intubation. Strategies such as two-person checks, videolaryngoscopy, and fibreoptic confirmation are highlighted. Sustained EtCO₂ indicates ventilation; its absence demands immediate action. Team involvement and adherence to these practices are vital for patient safety. LEARNING OBJECTIVES: 1.To understand the value of monitoring end tidal carbon dioxide during anaesthesia and sedation
2. To understand human factor elements involved in cases that led to unrecognised oesophageal intubations and death
