This play is not merely an adaptation; it is a heartfelt reinterpretation that transforms poetry into a living, breathing stage experience.Adapted, Dramatised, Scenography & Directed by Satyabrata Rout, the production reimagines the powerful story of Baji Rout—the youngest martyr of India’s freedom movement-through a contemporary theatrical lens. It captures the essence of sacrifice, resistance, and the indomitable courage of youth, making it profoundly relevant even today.Through a seamless blend of poetic narration and dramatic action, the performance unfolds as an emotional journey. It invites the audience to witness not only a historical moment but also the internal struggle of a society grappling with injustice, oppression, and the call for change. The production is enriched with evocative scenography that combines lighting, stage design, music, and movement to create a visually immersive environment. Each frame on stage is carefully composed to enhance the emotional intensity of the narrative, allowing the audience to connect deeply with the characters and their experiences.Concept & Artistic VisionAt its core, “Nuhe Bandhu Nuhe Eha Chita” is a tribute to the spirit of resistance and the timeless relevance of courage. The play moves beyond a linear retelling and instead adopts a layered storytelling approach, interweaving past and present, poetry and performance, realism and symbolism. The director envisions the stage as a dynamic space where memory, history, and imagination coexist. The use of minimal yet symbolic props, fluid actor movements, and rhythmic dialogue delivery creates a theatrical language that is both rooted in tradition and experimental in form. The scenography plays a crucial role in shaping this experience. Light and shadow are used not just for visibility but as narrative tools-highlighting conflict, isolation, and hope. Sound design and background score further intensify the emotional landscape, guiding the audience through moments of tension, silence, and catharsis.Narrative EssenceThe play draws inspiration from the story of Baji Rout, a young boy whose act of defiance against colonial forces became a symbol of bravery and sacrifice. However, this production goes beyond historical narration. It asks deeper questions:1-What does courage mean in today’s world?2-How do we respond to injustice in our own lives?3-Can the spirit of resistance still inspire change?Through powerful monologues, ensemble performances, and symbolic sequences, the play reflects on these questions, making the story both personal and universal.Performance & ExecutionThe performers from Space Academy, Bhubaneswar bring remarkable energy and sincerity to the stage. Their performances are marked by:1-Strong emotional expression2-Precise body language and movement3-Cohesive ensemble coordination4-Deep connection with the narrativeThe actors do not merely perform characters; they embody the emotions and conflicts that define the story, creating a compelling and immersive experience for the audience. Why You Should Watch ?1-A rare and meaningful fusion of poetry and theatre.2-A tribute to one of India’s youngest freedom fighters.3-A visually striking production with innovative scenography.4-A deeply emotional and thought-provoking narrative.5-A celebration of Odia literature and cultural expression.Event DetailsTheatre Festival: 3rd Nabarasa Natya Mela 2026–27Organised by: Kalakar Theatre,Bhubaneswar,OdishaPerformed by: Space Academy, BhubaneswarLanguage: OdiaDuration: 110 MinGenre: Drama / Literary AdaptationVenue: Rabindra Mandap,Bhubaneswar,OdishaClosing Note“Nuhe Bandhu Nuhe Eha Chita” is more than a play-it is an experience that resonates beyond the stage. It reminds us of the power of storytelling, the importance of remembering our history, and the enduring relevance of courage in the face of adversity.Step into a space where poetry transforms into performance, where history comes alive, and where every moment on stage speaks to the heart.Don’t miss this unforgettable theatrical journey.Satyabrata RoutProf. Satyabrata Rout is one of the leading scenographers and visual theatre practitioners of contemporary Indian theatre. Born in Odisha in 1958, he studied Design and Direction at the National School of Drama and later emerged as a major force in redefining the relationship between space, actor, image, and audience in Indian performance traditions. He served as faculty at the National School of Drama and later became Professor and Head of the Department of Theatre Arts at the University of Hyderabad.  Rout is widely recognised for conceptualising “Visual Theatre” and developing the theory of “Indian Scenography,” where performance space becomes an active dramatic language rather than a decorative background. Drawing from the aesthetics of the Natyashastra, folk traditions, architecture, sculpture, ritual, silence, rhythm, and symbolic imagery, he evolved a scenographic approach rooted in Indian cultural memory while remaining contemporary in expression. His productions such as Tumhara Vincent, Shakuntala, Evam Indrajit, Animal Farm, and Nagmandal are noted for their poetic spatial compositions and strong visual metaphors.  His landmark book, Scenography: An Indian Perspective, is considered one of the first comprehensive Indian treatises on scenography. The work documents the evolution of theatrical space in India and argues for a collaborative theatre language integrating body, sound, light, movement, and architecture.  For his immense contribution to theatre, Rout received the prestigious Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for Theatre Direction in 2016. His work continues to influence directors, designers, scholars, and young theatre practitioners across India and abroad.
