# Event Details - **Event Name**: Sea Voyage with Salieu Suso - **Event Start and End Date**: Sat, 31 May, 2025 at 04:00 pm – Sun, 01 Jun, 2025 at 07:00 pm - **Event Description**: FREE ADMISSION Saturday, May 31st, 4:00PM, Lani Hall—Presentation and workshop by Salieu Suso Sunday, June 1st, 4:00PM, Ostin Ensemble Room—Early Music Ensemble performance featuring Salieu Suso WORKSHOP: Salieu Suso will present on the kora and traditional musical practices, ending with an interactive workshop that will invite attendees to sing and play along. Born into a family of traditional African jalis (musician-historians), Salieu Suso began training on the 21-stringed kora at the age of 8, and began his professional career by the age of fifteen. He has performed widely throughout the U.S., Africa and Europe, and is known for his diverse range of musical collaborations. In 2003 he ventured into an exciting exploration of African and Afro-Cuban rhythms with three master percussionists: Benny Arocho (bata, bugarabu, Thai klong yaw); Olympia Ward (chekere, conga, jembe); and John Ward (jembe). One of Salieu Suso’s songs, “Sidi Yellah” was featured on the album Badenya: Manden Jaliya in New York City, a compilation of Manden and Mandinka Music by musicians in New York City (Smithsonian Folkways Recordings, 2001). Salieu composed Tootie’s Last Suit, the soundtrack to a documentary film. CONCERT: You are a sailor about to embark on a journey to discover the musics appropriate to shipboard life, and to each port of call. Musical selections include shipboard hauling, pumping, and rowing chants; New Light hymns that travelled with Jamaican Maroons from Nova Scotia to Sierra Leone; rebel songs of the United Irishmen; and dance music of all sorts, from “La Bamba” to the contradanzas of Black British composer Ignatius Sancho and Spanish jack-of-all-trades, Pablo Minguet. When our voyage gets to Senegal (which wasn’t fully colonized yet in 1810), special guest Salieu Suso, a master Kora player, will come on board for a solo performance, and some collaborative music-making across traditions. As always, the EME performs on period instruments in accordance with historical performance practice.
