What happens when you challenge a group of young dancers to climb a building turned on its side – or upside down? Or when they play the theater’s stage machinery like an oversized musical instrument, or dance with a boom microphone to generate the soundtrack for the dance itself?

“Run Time Anomaly” begins with precisely these kinds of questions. Together with the Youth Dance Company Sasha Waltz & Guests and the choreographers Lázló Sandig and Wibke Storkan, composer, performer and sound artist Simon Steen-Andersen inhabited the building of the Akademie der Künste at Hanseatenweg for three weeks, exploring the building’s hidden sounds and history while searching for direct connections between sound, body, and architecture.

The result is a fantastical live documentary portraying the dance company and the architecture through one another. The young dancers take to a stage that extends into transformed spaces, entering a play between reality and imagination – all set to a soundscape of amplified movements, body- and building-shaking sub-frequencies, echoes from archival electronic music, cinematic dreamscapes, and transformations of the dancers’ own favourite dance tracks.

The world premiere was commissioned and produced by the festival Voices Berlin in 2025. We are delighted to be able to present the final version of the piece now.

Was passiert, wenn man eine Gruppe junger Tänzer*innen dazu anstachelt, ein auf die Seite gedrehtes – oder auf den Kopf gestelltes – Gebäude zu erklimmen? Oder wenn sie die Bühnenmaschinerie des Theaters wie ein überdimensioniertes Musikinstrument spielen oder mit einem Galgenmikrofon tanzen, um den Soundtrack für den Tanz selbst zu erzeugen?

„Run Time Anomaly“ beginnt genau mit solchen Fragen. Zusammen mit der Jugendtanzcompany von Sasha Waltz & Guests und den Choreograph*innen Lázló Sandig und Wibke Storkan bezog der Komponist, Performer und Klangkünstler Simon Steen-Andersen im Herbst 2025 drei Wochen lang das Gebäude der Akademie der Künste am Hanseatenweg. Sie erkundeten die verborgenen Klänge und die Geschichte des Gebäudes auf der Suche nach direkten Verbindungen zwischen Klang, Körper und Architektur.

Das Ergebnis ist eine fantastische Live-Dokumentation, die die Tanzkompanie und die Architektur in einem Wechselspiel der Perspektiven porträtiert. Die jungen Tänzer*innen betreten eine Bühne, die sich in transformierte Räume erstreckt, und begeben sich in ein Spiel zwischen Realität und Fantasie – untermalt von einer Klanglandschaft aus verstärkten Bewegungen, Körper und Gebäude zum Vibrieren bringende Subfrequenzen, Echos aus dem Archiv der elektronischen Musik, filmischen Traumlandschaften und Transformationen der eigenen Lieblings-Tanztracks der Tänzer*innen.

Die Weltpremiere wurde 2025 von dem Festival Voices Berlin in Auftrag gegeben und produziert. Wir freuen uns, jetzt die finale Version des Stückes präsentieren zu können.
