Lyrik reift langsam und ist etwas zwischen Prosa und Lied, zwischen Gebet und Abzählreim, zwischen kurzer Notiz im Trubel des Alltags und der Verfertigung von nutzloser Schönheit in Form von Worten als Protest gegen diesen Alltag. Lyrik ist das, was von wem und wovon auch immer übrig bleibt.

So hat Marina Frenk die Gedichte von Katerina Kuznetsova empfunden, als sie sie entdeckt hat.

Katerina Kuznetsova ist eine jiddische Dichterin, Lehrerin und Kulturaktivistin in Berlin. Ihre in Yiddishland, Di goldene pave und Birobidzhaner shtern veröffentlichten Werke verleihen der zeitgenössischen jiddischen Literaturszene neue Stimme und Lebendigkeit.

Die in jiddischer Sprache verfassten Gedichte der in Berlin lebenden Autorin haben Marina Frenk zu Melodien inspiriert, die sie mit den beiden Musiker:innen Lisa Hoppe und Paul Brody geteilt hat. Hoppe hat daraufhin ebenfalls inspiriert weitere Gedichte der Dichterin vertont – so entstand ein Liederzyklus zwischen Ballade und Witz, Widerspruch und Jazz, Anklängen an Klezmer oder auch nicht, improvisierter Sprech-Performance und klassischem Lied.

Diesen „Dazwischen“-Zustand spiegelt auch die heutzutage im Alltag selten gehörte jiddische Sprache wider, die viele Dialekte kennt, zwischen ukrainischem, polnischem, litauischem Jiddisch etc. unterscheidet und sich insbesondere in Deutschland allzu sehr nach Deutsch anhört, aber in hebräischen Buchstaben geschrieben wird, und man als Laie hoffentlich Lust bekommt, sich mehr über den Ursprung und die Geschichte dieser Sprache zu informieren. Eine Sprache ohne Staat und ohne Armee – irgendwie frei.

Di Shkatulkeles begeben sich auf eine verspielte, in Noten verfertigte Reise in den Kern von im Hier und Jetzt verfasster Lyrik in jiddischer Sprache. In etwas, das übrig bleibt oder vergessen wurde, jedoch erinnert und gelernt, aber auf jeden Fall neu erfunden werden kann – vegn paradoksn fun tsayt!

Poetry matures slowly and is something between prose and song, between prayer and nursery rhyme, between a brief note in the hustle and bustle of everyday life and the creation of useless beauty in the form of words as a protest against this everyday life. Poetry is what remains of whoever and whatever.

This is how Marina Frenk felt about Katerina Kuznetsova’s poems when she discovered them.

Katerina Kuznetsova is a Yiddish poet, teacher, and cultural activist in Berlin. Her work, published in Yiddishland, Di goldene pave, and Birobidzhaner shtern, brings new voice and vitality to the contemporary Yiddish literary scene.

The Berlin-based author’s Yiddish poems inspired Marina Frenk to create melodies, which she shared with the two musicians Lisa Hoppe and Paul Brody. Hoppe, also inspired by this, set more of the poet’s poems to music – thus creating a song cycle that oscillates between ballad and wit, contradiction and jazz, with or without hints of klezmer, improvised spoken word performance, and classical song.

This “in-between” state is also reflected in the Yiddish language, which is rarely heard in everyday life these days. It has many dialects, distinguishes between Ukrainian Yiddish, Polish Yiddish, Lithuanian Yiddish, etc., and, especially in Germany, sounds very much like German, but is written in Hebrew letters, hopefully inspiring the layperson to learn more about the origins and history of this language. A language without a state and without an army—somehow free.

Di Shkatulkeles embark on a playful, musically recorded journey into the core of Yiddish poetry written in the here and now. Into something that remains or has been forgotten, yet can be remembered and learned, but can definitely be reinvented — vegn paradoksn fun tsayt!
