Teen Winter Series: Exploring Fermentation


Winter Teen Cooking and Herbal Medicine Making Series


Do you want to make sauerkraut, herbal tea blends, and home-made pastries? Come gather on our farm to explore cooking and herbal medicine-making with teens in the community! Our farm-to-table programming brings a Jewish lens to farming, food and cooking content. We will harvest food and medicine from the farm to use in our cooking classes, and come together to share food, stories and blessings. For ages 13-18.

 

January 27th: Exploring Fermentation

In our fermentation workshop, we will learn the meaning of fermentation and preservation in Jewish history and heritage. We will get to taste all kinds of fermented foods, then make pickles and sauerkraut to take home. Each program begins with grounding through meditation, song or movement. To close, we will reflect on the day and enjoy snacks together. 


February 3rd: Medicinal Plants on the Farm

In our medicine-making workshop, we will study where medicinal plants show up in Jewish texts, and how they have been used to promote holistic health. We will harvest herbs to make tea, salve and havdalah bundles. You'll get to take herbs and recipes home! Each program begins with grounding through meditation, song or movement. To close, we will reflect on the day and enjoy snacks together. 


February 10th: The Wonders of Baking

In our baking workshop, we will focus on wheat’s significance in Judaism, and the journey that it takes from field to table. We will situate the wheat harvest in the Jewish agricultural calendar (harvest at Shavuot), as well as study the laws of peah (donating a corner of your field) and the Jewish approach to hunger and justice. Teens will thresh, winnow and grind wheat that was grown on site to make a traditional pastry like hamantaschen or rugelach. We will also make jam from scratch to enjoy with the pastries. Each program begins with grounding through meditation, song or movement. To close, we will reflect on the day and enjoy snacks together.
