Yet he could not have anticipated the additional challenges he would face in the new Trump Administration. Would Berkeley, arguably the top public research university in the world, be able to achieve the goals he expressed on his first day on the job:“Our combination of access and excellence occupies a truly singular place in higher education,” he said. “That singularity is an opportunity to leave a bigger mark on society and make our capabilities understood even more widely around the world. We can make UC Berkeley the university of choice for faculty, staff, and students who want to have an impact. This is my aim.”Chancellor Lyons will discuss those challenges at Arts & Culture on Wednesday, July 2, at 7 p.m. as he reflects on his first year as chancellor. He majored in economics and earned his doctorate in the field at MIT. He taught at Columbia for six years and then had a brief stint on Wall Street. Chancellor Lyons returned to Berkeley in 1993 to teach at Haas School of Business, where he won many teaching awards and served as dean from 2008-2018. He then became Vice Chancellor and Chief Officer for Innovation and Entrepreneurship. During his time in that role, UC Berkeley became the top university for creating venture-backed startups. He also helped launch Berkeley Changemaker, an interdisciplinary program that helps new students to become more involved in innovation and entrepreneurship.Commenting on the selection of Chancellor Lyons, Michael Drake, president of the UC system, told the UC Regents: “It’s one thing to find a person with the appropriate academic and research credentials, the necessary leadership experience, and an understanding of what it takes to lead a successful research university in the public setting, It’s quite another to find a candidate who brings all that along with a deep understanding of the landscape in California and an intrinsic love for UC.” In April, Chancellor Lyons, together with hundreds of other leaders of colleges and universities, signed a letter criticizing the federal government’s “unprecedented overreach and political interference endangering American higher education.” The letter called for “constructive engagement that improves our institutions and serves our republic.” In a video May 9, the chancellor reconfirmed UC Berkeley’s mission and values and defended its commitment to diversity.
