Lotus of the Heart with Leila Swenson
"Now, here in this fort of brahman there is a small lotus, a dwelling-place, and within it, a small space. In that space there is something-- and that's what you should try to discover, that's what you should seek to perceive.'... 'As vast as the space here around us is this space within the heart, and within it, are contained both the earth and the sky, both fire and the wind, both the sun and the moon, both lightning and stars. What belongs here to this space around us, as well as what does not--all that is contained within it.'" ~ Chandogya Upanishad
In this workshop we will explore the infinite space of our spiritual heart (hridaya), through the symbol of the lotus (padma).
First in standing poses we'll root our legs and feet solidly in the earth, just as the lotus roots do in the muddy depths of a pond. Next we'll play with shoulder openers and strength-building arm balances, reminiscent of lotus petals floating on the surface of a pond reaching toward the light, just as each of us reaches to fulfill our own potential. The asana practice ends by drawing the earth and light we've contacted into our center, to discover there a lasting movement in a backbend that's pure, vital, and expansive.
Finally, we'll explore the subtle practices of numinous sound (mantra), conscious breathing (pranayama), ritual hand gestures (mudra), and meditation (dhyana) to penetrate even farther into the the infinite space in our spiritual heart.
All are welcome!
