Clearly we have entered the Age of A.I., and the choices we make about this incredible invention may have profound consequences for humanity.Fortunately, A.I. expert Robert Todd, will return to Arts and Culture on Wednesday, August 5, at 7 p.m., to discuss this technology, which has grown exponentially since his sold-out City Club talk two years ago.  He will give a brief demonstration of how A.I. can work and then will talk about the recent influential essay by Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei, which focuses on how to foster the positive capabilities of A.I. and limit its negative ones. Anthropic developed the popular A.I. assistant Claude and has been much in the news lately because of its refusal to give the U.S. Department of Defense unrestrict accesses to its technology for military use. Tickets for this program are $5 for club members and students and $10 for non-members. Please register early so we can be sure to accommodate everyone comfortably. One of UC Berkeley’s most popular OLLI instructors, Todd is well known for his clear and clever explanations of  how A.I. was developed, what it can and cannot do, and what it means to have this new intelligence readily available. Many City Club members have taken his classes and have learned to use A.I. for, among other tasks, making travel plans, improving their investment decisions, and helping to manage in foreign languages.  “Robert Todd is an incredibly knowledgeable and entertaining speaker,” says BCC member Susan Newman, who has taken six courses from him. “He's able to demystify A.I. while giving a thorough and serious assessment of its pros and cons.”  For more than three decades, Todd has worked at the confluence of technology, learning, and human behavior. As a pioneer of e-learning in the late 1990s, he helped revolutionize the way people acquire knowledge. From 2006-2011, he was Global Director of Learning Technology at McKinsey & Company, where he built the firm’s first e-learning technology. At San Francisco State, he created some of the earliest online courses. His passion for leveraging technology to enhance education and change behavior also led him to leadership roles at organizations, including DigitalThink, one of the first e-Learning companies to provide online mentors and tutors; and the professional networking site LikedIn. He currently leads A.I. enablement at D.E. Shaw, the global investment and technology development firm.  In addition, Todd maintains a website, Rethinking Intelligence.
