The JaZzLine INSTITUTE, in partnership with the Jazzschool, presents a free ensemble masterclass featuring Faye Carol and her trio. Open to instrumentalists and vocalists of all levels, participants will receive coaching in improvisation, repertoire, ensemble interaction, and performance skills in a supportive, collaborative setting.

Often referred to as the “Betty Carter of the West Coast,” Faye Carol is a celebrated vocalist, bandleader, and educator whose ensembles have served as a training ground for generations of Bay Area artists over the past 50 years, including Benny Green, Dayna Stephens, Glen Pearson, Darrell Green, Marcus Shelby, Kito Kamili, and Joe Warner. Her vocal protégés include Ledisi and Kehlani.

Pianist and musical director Joe Warner is one of the Bay Area’s brightest young talents. A longtime collaborator with Faye Carol for more than 12 years, he also leads his own groups and has worked with artists including Mary Stallings, Gary Bartz, Houston Person, Billy Hart, Herlin Riley, John Handy, and Bernard Purdie.

Drummer Dante Roberson is among the Bay Area’s most in-demand musicians, moving fluidly between jazz, blues, gospel, and funk. His performance and recording credits include Kanye West, The Whispers, Cameo, Daryl Coley, En Vogue, and Tony! Toni! Toné!

Bassist David Ewell is a first-call musician known for his versatility and creativity across straight-ahead jazz, free improvisation, and world music traditions.
