Learn with your Ashby Village Elder Action colleagues how to influence your state legislators this year on issues that are important to seniors. Ashby Village’s Elder Action group invites you to a conversation with a communications consultant to the California State Legislature. Many of our Ashby Village members have asked how they can have an impact on critical policy decisions. This is a rare opportunity to get an insider’s view on how you can have an effective voice in critical issues facing us statewide.
Speaker James Barba, a communications consultant, is the speechwriter for California State Senate President Pro Tem Toni Atkins and held the same position for former Senate President Pro Tem Kevin de Leon before his U.S. Senate run. Barba will lead us through the legislative process and will focus on areas being studied by Elder Action committees – health care, homelessness and possible changes to Proposition 13.
Barba has helped pass legislation making California the first major economy to commit to 100 percent clean energy by 2045; raising the state’s minimum wage to $15 an hour; passing the strongest equal pay law in America; enacting the nation’s most comprehensive gun control measures; and making California a sanctuary state to protect law-abiding undocumented immigrants from deportation. He previously worked for NextGen America, an organization focused on solutions to climate change and policies to support healthy children and families.
This event is brought to you by the Elder Action Interest Group of Ashby Village.
