In that first reading of this masterpiece, she played the piano part, Anton Stadler, for whom Mozart also wrote his Concerto and Quintet, played the clarinet, and Mozart played the viola. No composer before Mozart had written for this combination of instruments. The ruckus and noise of a skittles alley, where Mozart conceived the work, seems to have had no effect on the result--a work of luminous beauty. Schumann's Fantasiestücke (Fantasy Pieces), op. 73, originally for clarinet and piano, was written in two days in February of 1849. It consists of three short, contrasting movements, Zart (tender), Lebhaft (lively), Rasch und mit Feuer (fiery), that reflect in part the duality described by Schumann of his emotional and musical makeup: "Florestan," outward and robust; "Eusebius," moody and introspective. Schumann suggested that violin, cello or viola could also play Fantasy Pieces, and because of its popularity, it is often done that way.Brahms' Trio, op. 114, for clarinet, cello and piano is one of his last important chamber works. In 1890 Brahms announced to his publisher Simrock that he was ready to retire from composing. But on meeting and hearing the clarinetist Richard Mühlfeld, he was inspired to write four large-scale works that featured the clarinet: Trio, op. 114; Sonatas (2), op. 120; Quintet, op. 115, for clarinet and string quartet. The Trio reflects an utterly charming and profound autumnal quality that characterizes late Brahms.
