The Chosun people are on the verge of extinction.” How does one walk through an age like that—an age as dark as night, a time when no path can be seen?It was a time when Koreans were forced to bow at Shinto shrines, to change their names into Japanese under the policy of sōshi‑kaimei, when Korean-language education was banned, and even writing poetry in Hangul was dangerous. It was an age filled with shame and self-reproach, when one wondered what, if anything, could be done. However, no single one has the power to turn night into day.Yun Dongju’s poem “I Go with My Eyes Closed” begins with the call, “Children who long for the sun, children who love the stars.” And then he says, “The night was dark, so go with your eyes closed.” Why would he tell us to walk with our eyes closed? He continues, “Scatter the seeds you carry as you walk.” In the darkness of night, he urges us to sow seeds.We open this memorial performance on the 81st anniversary of Yun Dong-ju’s passing with that image: walking through the night, eyes closed, sowing seeds.
