We’re keeping it friendly and straightforward. These are Backbeat house rules, with relaxed call-pocket play.
BREAKING
• Lag to determine who breaks first in each match. Alternate breaks after that.
• On the break, pocket a ball or drive at least four object balls to a rail. If neither happens, re-rack and let the opponent break.
• Making the 8-ball on a legal break wins the rack. Making the 8-ball on the break while scratching loses the rack.
CALLING SHOTS
• Obvious shots do not need to be called.
• Call the ball and intended pocket on shots that aren’t obvious, including banks, kicks, and combinations.
• You do not need to explain every rail or incidental contact.
• If your ball goes into an unintended pocket, it stays down, but your turn ends.
• You MUST call the 8-ball pocket to win. No slop on the 8!
SOLIDS & STRIPES
• The table is open after the break.
• Your group is established by legally pocketing a ball in the intended pocket after the break.
• Pocket all balls in your group before shooting the 8-ball on a separate shot.
FOULS & BALL IN HAND
• Hit a ball from your own group first—or the 8-ball once your group is cleared.
• After contact, a ball must be pocketed or any ball must reach a rail. Otherwise, it is a foul.
• Scratches and other shot fouls give your opponent ball in hand anywhere on the table.
• Our house rule includes ball in hand anywhere after a break scratch.
• Scratching while shooting at the 8-ball loses the rack, even if the 8-ball stays on the table.
• Making the 8-ball early or in the wrong pocket loses the rack.
• NO jump shots and NO massé shots.
TOURNAMENT FORMAT
• Double elimination, with a winners’ bracket and a losers’ bracket.
• Everyone starts in the winners’ bracket. Your first match loss moves you to the losers’ bracket. Your second match loss eliminates you.
• Race to 3 in BOTH brackets.
• If the undefeated finalist loses the championship match, a final reset is played—another race to 3.
SPORTSMANSHIP
• Respect your opponent, the equipment, and the staff.
• Be clear about your shots and keep matches moving.
• If a shot looks questionable, ask the tournament director to watch BEFORE shooting.
• Both players must confirm and report the final score.
• The tournament director makes the final ruling on disputes.
