The Madison County Tenants Union will be holding a petition drive and postcard writing campaign to state lawmakers in support of HB 338 and HB 281. We will have a booth set up on the lawn outside of Union Church in Berea from 1p-4:30p to collect signatures. Stop by to take action, raise your voice, and learn more!

Some background on two bills in our state government. 

What's this about?
Over 40,000 evictions are filed every year in Kentucky, and up to 45% of those eviction filings are dismissed–yet even these dismissed evictions follow you around for the rest of your life. Some of those filings also list minors–young people under the age of 18 who aren’t even old enough to sign a lease. At Welcome Home Kentucky, we know THAT AIN'T RIGHT!

HB 338 will automatically expunge evictions that have been dismissed by the courts from our records. We want all of our lawmakers to support this bill. 

What's going on with HB 281?
Right now, there is a bill that will cut red tape on hot meal programs at homeless shelters, churches and disaster relief efforts. These programs are presently being prevented from accepting home-cooked meals as donations for services. No matter if our meals are prepared in commercially certified kitchens or if they are prepared with love in a home kitchen, we all got to eat! We need State Senators to follow the leadership of our State House (who recently passed HB 281 UNANIMOUSLY!) and prioritize HB 281 to receive a committee assignment and be brought to the Senate floor for a vote as quickly as possible.
