So, what exactly is a “swap meetup,” you may ask?
It’s really simple! Many of us spend hours chatting with fellow hobbyists on WhatsApp and Facebook sharing advice, posting photos, trading tips, and debating the best filter media. But have you ever wanted to actually meet the people behind those names and profile pictures?
Maybe you also have some unused aquarium equipment lying around… that sponge filter you upgraded, that heater you don’t use anymore, or that breeding box collecting dust. Or perhaps you have extra plants, fry that need new homes, or a fish you’d like to rehome or sell.
A swap meetup brings all of that together. You get to meet your fellow fishkeepers in person, build real connections, exchange knowledge, and trade your unwanted fishkeeping goodies for something you might genuinely need—all while enjoying a relaxed, hobby-filled day.
How does it work?
It’s very straightforward. Bring yourself—obviously—and anything aquarium-related that you’re no longer using and would like to swap or sell. This can include equipment, decorations, fish, shrimp, snails, plants, hardscape, or anything else from your fishkeeping stash.
At the meetup, you can swap your items for something someone else brought along, or you can sell your items if someone is interested. You can also give away items you don’t want anymore. And of course, you are completely welcome to come even if you don’t bring anything at all; many people simply enjoy the atmosphere, the conversations, and the chance to meet other hobbyists.
Please remember to label your items clearly so they don’t get mixed up with other people’s belongings. It keeps everything organized and prevents awkward “Was this yours or mine?” moments. While bringing items isn’t required, the real fun of these meetups comes from interacting with others, discovering interesting finds, and seeing what fellow fishkeepers bring along. Some of the best surprises are the ones you never expected.
Where will this happen?
We’re planning to host these meetups in the Gauteng area, partnering with aquarium stores that are excited to support the community. If we aren’t hosting one in your specific area yet, it likely means a shop there hasn’t given us the green light. If you’d like one closer to home, feel free to chat with your local aquarium store and encourage them to get involved.
Our next official swap meetup will take place on 10 January 2026, at 4M Fish & Aquariums in Boksburg, running from 10:00 to 13:00. They’ve graciously agreed to host us for our first meetup of 2026, and we’re excited to kick off the year with a fun, friendly, fish-filled gathering.
