Carry the Flame vividly recounts the early years of the Canadian Outward Bound Wilderness School (COBWS) in Northwest Ontario. Throughout more than fifty eclectic, reflective, and humorous personal essays, former staff, administrators, board members, and students articulate the distinctive spirit of the school and its lasting impact on their lives. The remote location of COBWS on Black Sturgeon Lake, coupled with the uncommon vision of its founder, Bob Pieh, contributed to a unique implementation of Outward Bound. Carry the Flame is a 320-page hardcover book, with sixty-five illustrations.
“This book is a celebration of life . . . a portrait of an educational enclave that was years ahead of its time by embracing and embodying Kurt Hahn’s broad philosophical notions about what it means to be a complete human being.”— James Raffan, explorer, educator, and author of Circling the Midnight Sun, Deep Waters, and Ice Walker
