Champion Race All times are approximate Rules: RULES FOR BUILDING YOUR PINEWOOD DERBY CAR This event will use the framework of basic Pinewood Derby Car Building Rules that have been established by Scouting America. The head of Belleville Cub Scouts - Pack 61 will publish the rules for building and racing cars (below) and will have the final determination of any issues that arise on race day. On race day, after your car has been weighed in (5 oz, or less) and passed general inspection, you will not be able to handle your car until your racing is over. During the registration period, you will be able to do a preliminary weigh-in and make test runs down the track so that you can make any adjustments to your car that you deem necessary. SPECIFICATIONS - These general rules for construction are to be followed. All cars must pass inspection to qualify for racing: 1. Axles, wheels, and body SHALL BE from the materials provided in a standard Pinewood kit. 2. The main body of the car shall be made of pine. Wheels shall be plastic. Axles shall be metal. 3. Weight shall NOT exceed 5 ounces. 4. NO part of the car can stick out ahead of the starting pin on the track. 5. Width shall NOT exceed 2-3/4 inches. Length shall NOT exceed 7 inches. 6. Use of wheel bearings, washers, and bushings are PROHIBITED. 7. NO lubricating oil may be used. Axles MAY be lubricated with powdered graphite or silicone. 8. The car SHALL NOT ride on any kind of spring. 9. The car MUST BE free-wheeling, with NO starting or accelerating devices. 10. NO loose materials of any kind are allowed in the car. SAFETY - Make safety your top priority. While building and racing your Pinewood Derby Car, please refer to these guidelines for maintaining safety: 1. Gather your safety essentials: dust mask, goggles, and latex gloves. 2. Wear eye protection at all times. 3. Monitor any youths' use of tools. 4. Wear a dust mask when appropriate. 5. Work in a well-lighted and well-ventilated area. 6. Consider wearing gloves when using sharp tools. 7. Do not wear loose-fitting clothing. 8. Do not melt lead; handle lead with care. 9. Follow all safety rules and precautions listed on the tools and products you use. 10.
