Andrew will chart how Renaissance masters painted Hell under strict theological guidelines, why the 18th-century Gothic backlash branded horror fiction a threat to virtue and how Victorian censors targeted Frankenstein and Dracula.

In the 20th century, the war on the macabre intensified. Learn about the Nazis' 'Degenerate Art' exhibition, the 1950s horror comic crackdowns and cinema's battle against the Hollywood Hays Code, Britain's dreaded X certificate and the 1980s 'video nasties' panic.
