Late Night Design
We're excited to bring back Late Night Design, a chance to see behind the scenes of some of Belfast's most creative design studios in Portview Trade Centre. We aim to showcase a range of design areas and highlight the diversity of talent here in Northern Ireland.
This year’s studios include Creative Exchange, McGonigle McGrath and Lines & Current!
“Creative Exchange was established by a group of artists in East Belfast in 1996 and in the intervening 22 years has contributed to the history, culture, economy and creativity of its locality. The studios provide workspace to visual artists working in painting, print, illustration, ceramics, digital art and socially engaged art.
Our aim is to provide affordable studio space for the artistic community particularly in East Belfast, whilst providing a programme of opportunities for artists to prioritise their practice and develop professionally.”
LINES & CURRENT
Jon & Rebekah Johanson are the founders of Minimal Accessories Brand Lines & Current. Born out of a love for clean lines with a boho twist, they started out with one product and quickly moved to a collection of over 25 items over 4 collections
The designs Rebekah creates are timeless, clean and minimalistic, but they represent something more than that. When people make a purchase, it is more than a transaction. "It is our hope to create a brand that offers personal connection and where her customers feel they are part of something bigger." With each design, Rebekah has employed storytelling to create connection with her audience. Each piece has a name and tale to tell. Also, 10% of profits are given straight to transforming charities, having partnered with 8 to date and in 2017 sent 17 African children to school for a year with their donation to SOS Childrens Villages.
"We have been savvy in leveraging the power of social media to promote the brand and further, built a self-generating online ecosystem where customers promote the brand using a hashtag we created (#MinimalbutwithMeaning) as they share their purchases with their friends online. We love what we do and find this area of creative entrepreneurship to be exciting and fulfilling."
McGonigle McGrath is an architectural practice based in Belfast. Their work is marked by a commitment to order and geometry, careful orchestration of spatial sequence giving equal importance to interior and exterior space, a strong sense of composition, refined detailing, control of light, and value given to the experiential. The work responds to the context of both the immediate and wider landscape, and has an emotive link through form to the memory of a lost tradition. The work of the practice has been recognised with numerous awards and publications so join them and get a chance to see their studio!
