A sweeping story of courage and revenge, Ridley Scott's Gladiator revived the sword and sandal epic while becoming one of the most acclaimed and popular historical dramas of the decade. Presented in partnership with Street Soccer NI.
The death of emperor Marcus Aurelius (Richard Harris) throws the Roman Empire into chaos. Maximus (Russell Crowe) is one of the Roman army's most capable and trusted generals and a key advisor to the emperor. As Marcus' devious son Commodus (Joaquin Phoenix) ascends to the throne, he orders Maximus’ execution—and that of his family.
Barely escaping death, Maximus is forced into slavery and trained as a gladiator in the arena where his fame grows. Now he has come to Rome, intent on avenging the murder of his wife and son.
