Bio - Sir Nigel Hamilton

Sir Nigel Hamilton K C B; D L; D.Univ.; B Sc (Hons).; Diploma in Company Direction

Sir Nigel Hamilton is a Psychology graduate from Queen’s University, Belfast. He joined the Northern Ireland Civil Service in 1970 and retired in 2008.

He was Permanent Secretary in the Department of Education between 1998 and 2000 and then became Permanent Secretary in the Department of Regional Development between 2000 and 2002.

Sir Nigel became Head of the Northern Ireland Civil Service in 2002, and also Head of the Office of the First Minister and the Deputy First Minister and Secretary to the Northern Ireland Executive, until his retirement in 2008.

He was awarded an Honorary Doctorate by the University of Ulster in 2008 for his services to public administration in Northern Ireland.

On his retirement in 2008, he was appointed Chairman of the N I Council of The Prince’s Trust, from which he retired in January 2017; he was Chairman of the Bryson Charitable Group from 2008 until 2013; he was a Non-executive Director of the Ulster Bank between 2009 and Sept 2016; and also served for four years as a Non-Executive Director of Belfast City Airport. He is also currently Chair of New Irish Arts and of the Belfast Boys’ Model Bursary Fund.

Sir Nigel has, since Nov 2009 been the Vice Lord - Lieutenant for the City and County of Belfast.

He was President of the Ulster Branch of the Irish Rugby Football Union in the season 2010/2011.
