- **Event Name**: Belfast - Advanced Veterinary Nursing: Anaesthesia Monitoring
- **Event Start and End Date**: Wed, 19 May, 2027 at 09:30 am – Wed, 19 May, 2027 at 05:00 pm (+01:00)
- **Event Description**: Take your anaesthesia skills beyond the basics with advanced lectures, clinical cases, hands-on practicals and real-world decision-making.About this EventBuilding confidence in anaesthesia starts with understanding the fundamentals, but advancing your practice means learning how to apply that knowledge as patients, procedures and physiology become more complex.Advanced anaesthesia is not about following a single protocol. It is about understanding the why behind your decisions, recognising how anaesthetic drugs, patient comorbidities, surgical procedures and physiological changes interact, and knowing how to adapt your anaesthetic plan when things don't go as expected. This interactive one-day roadshow will take your anaesthesia knowledge beyond the basics, exploring advanced concepts in patient assessment, anaesthetic planning, monitoring, clinical decision-making and troubleshooting. We will connect physiology, pharmacology and monitoring to real clinical scenarios, helping you interpret what your patient is telling you and decide what to do next.Designed for veterinary nurses who already have a good understanding of anaesthesia and want to develop their knowledge further, this day aims to build confidence in managing more challenging patients and making informed, patient-specific anaesthetic decisions.Come prepared to question, troubleshoot and think beyond the numbers — because advanced anaesthesia isn't about memorising more; it's about understanding more. Our lectures include:Pressure Problems: Managing Hypotension Under AnaesthesiaHypotension is common under anaesthesia, but fluids aren't always the answer. Explore the physiology behind falling blood pressure, how to identify what might be driving it, and when to reach for a vasopressor or inotrope. We'll unpack the pharmacology of commonly used cardiovascular drugs and how to choose the right intervention for the patient in front of you.Fluids: When, What & How Much?Move beyond maintenance rates and shock rates. We'll explore fluid responsiveness, resuscitation and replacement, choosing the right fluid for the job, and recognising when more fluid may actually do more harm than good. A practical update on making smarter fluid therapy decisions during anaesthesia.Pressure, Perfusion & the Patient: Putting It Into PracticeNow it's time to put the theory into practice. Work through real-world anaesthesia cases where the blood pressure is falling and the answer isn't always another fluid bolus. We'll interpret the information in front of us, identify what might be driving the hypotension and decide whether our patient needs fluids, a vasopressor, an inotrope – or something else entirely.Blood Gases: Interpretation to InterventionBlood gases can look intimidating, but interpretation doesn't need to be complicated. Develop a systematic approach to assessing ventilation, oxygenation, acid-base status, electrolytes and lactate before taking the most important step: deciding what the results actually mean for your anaesthetic plan and patient management.Lines, Lines, Lines! Central & Arterial AccessTime to get hands-on! This practical session focuses on the techniques, equipment and anatomy involved in placing arterial and central venous catheters. Build confidence with vascular access and explore how these lines can expand the monitoring and treatment options available for our more challenging anaesthesia patients.Nose to Tail: Anaesthesia for the Critical PatientWhat happens when your patient has more than one problem? Working nose to tail, we'll tackle challenging anaesthesia cases where there's rarely one perfect answer. Bring together physiology, pharmacology, monitoring, fluid therapy and everything we've covered throughout the day to decide what matters most, what you're going to do about it and what you'll do when the plan doesn't work.Take Your Best Guess!Finish the day with a fun, interactive anaesthesia challenge! Put your clinical instincts to the test with patient scenarios, monitor traces, drug questions, blood gases and a few surprises along the way. No pressure, no pass marks — just have a go, see what you know and maybe learn something unexpected.Plus: Four Recorded Advanced Anaesthesia LecturesYour learning doesn't finish at 5pm. Your ticket also includes one month of access to four additional recorded advanced anaesthesia lectures, giving you plenty of time to continue your learning after the live event and watch the sessions at a time that suits you.Head Trauma: Anaesthesia When Every mmHg MattersExplore cerebral perfusion and intracranial pressure alongside practical considerations for drug selection, blood pressure, ventilation, oxygenation and positioning.Pokes & Scopes: Anaesthesia for EndoscopyFrom GI endoscopy and bronchoscopy to rhinoscopy and other procedures, explore shared airways, insufflation, positioning, ventilation and the complications that can quickly turn a routine scope into a challenging anaesthetic.Short Nose, Big Challenges: Brachycephalic AnaesthesiaExplore how BOAS affects the entire anaesthetic journey, from premedication and induction through to ventilation, extubation and recovery, with practical strategies for managing the difficult airway and reducing complications.Breathe for Me: Mechanical Ventilation Beyond the BasicsMove beyond simply choosing a respiratory rate and tidal volume. Explore pressure and volume-controlled ventilation, airway pressures and compliance, PEEP and how to recognise when the ventilator is telling you something has changed. What's included? All delegates will receive a printed booklet of comprehensive notes and the PowerPoint slides from the day, alongside access to the four recorded advanced anaesthesia lectures. The day combines lectures, interactive clinical cases, practical vascular access and plenty of opportunities to apply your knowledge — rather than simply sitting through a full day of presentations.Come ready to think, question, practise and take your anaesthesia knowledge to the next level.Your Speaker: Courtney Scales DipVN NCert(Anaesth) PgCertVAA RVNCourtney is originally from New Zealand, where she trained and qualified. She began her career in veterinary nursing in 2007 and worked in multiple clinics in New Zealand before moving to Australia in 2015 to pursue her passion for anaesthesia. In 2016, she moved to the United Kingdom, where she most recently worked as an Anaesthesia Registered Veterinary Nurse at the Royal Veterinary College and also as a Clinical Educator in Anaesthesia for Burtons Academy. Courtney now works for Davies Veterinary Specialists.Courtney started Veterinary Anursethesia on various social media platforms throughout her studies and career to share anaesthesia tips with the veterinary community. She has written several journal articles and textbook chapters and enjoys face-to-face speaking about the practical side of anaesthesia monitoring in practice, at CPD events and national congresses.*INVOICING TO PRACTICE*Practices can be invoiced directly - please email info@anursethesia.co.uk.
