Beirut International Arab Book Fair (67th Edition)

"Identity and the Curse: A Conversation with Tarik Baggaari"

Panel Discussion | Guest: Tarik Bakkari — Moderator: Tarek El-Ariss

A session with Moroccan novelist Tarik Bakkari (b. Missour, 1988), author of Numidia—which won the Morocco Book Award and was shortlisted for the International Prize for Arabic Fiction (IPAF)—as well as The General’s Mirrors, The Blonde Killer (winner of the Moroccan Youth Book Award), and The Scents of Dihya.

The panel examines the recurring questions across his body of work: identity, lineage, the outcast, and the forgotten, alongside the presence of Amazigh heritage, the Atlas Mountains, and the village as a setting for both curse and redemption.

The discussion also addresses pressing contemporary themes in his writing: extremism and the internal psychology of the jihadist, the "Years of Lead" and the memory of state power in Morocco, and the overarching question facing a new generation of Arab novelists: How can history be written without turning the literary text into a mere document?

Panelists:

Tariq Baggaari: A Moroccan novelist born in Missour in 1988. His debut novel, Numidia, was shortlisted for the International Prize for Arabic Fiction. His other works include The General’s Mirrors, The Blonde Killer, and The Scents of Dihya.

Tarek El-Ariss: James Wright Professor and Chair of the Department of Middle Eastern Studies at Dartmouth College. A scholar of modern Arabic literature and digital culture, his English publications include Trials of Arab Modernity, and he recently published Water on Fire in Arabic.
