Pathogen 1990

I’ve been told about the pathogen before. As I was growing up, the story has been elaborating and even though I didn’t experience the Lebanese civil war, I watched Beirut’s infected body get deteriorated with time.

The narrative has been told so many times before until it became a myth, a distorted tale, a legend and even a bedtime story.
When asked about the now ghost city Beirut, my mom always made it clear that during the post war reconstruction period, symptoms of a virus dispersed in construction sites. She even recalls reading in “Alharb” newspaper a study suspecting the creation of a virus, due to numerous chemical reactions, stimulated when war victims’ blood and Israeli artillery toxins (since the Israeli invasion of Beirut in 1982 ) react together.
She said that the government overlooked the infection and continued to build in the city. Year after year, the virus started to feed from the city’s soul and expand into the newly constructed buildings. Not only did Pathogen 1990 affect the skyscrapers, it managed to affect and purge the old Beirutee houses.
Beirut became the ghost city that chased its citizens away and became alienated from life.

Pathogen 1990 is a series of 10 cityscapes that visually question the urbanization of Beirut; moreover the housing issues that the citizens of Beirut are dealing with on a daily basis. The series explores a topic that has been subject to discussion for years while keeping a fictional approach to it. The cityscapes are presenting the aesthetical research linked to its historical and socio-economical aspect.

The production of this exhibition has been generously funded by Mr. Michel Zoghzoghi.
