Organization and Study Skills Sessions For Students
Organization and Study Skills
Just as a carpenter needs the right tools (such as a saw and hammer) and basic skills (such as how to measure and cut wood) to frame a house, students need the right tools (such as notebooks and assignment pads) and basic study skills (such as reading and note-taking skills) to be successful in school.
We all know some students have problem-solving abilities which enable them to develop independently organization and study strategies. Other students however need direct, systematic instruction to develop these skills. Learning difficulties related to reading, spelling, and writing skills; concrete or abstract organization skills; short- or long-term memory; or attention deficit affect certain students' ability to self-design and independently apply study strategies. These students can learn study skills, but they need specific instruction and sufficient practice to do so.
S-miles center provides a flexible study skills model that can be taught in tutorials and small groups, as well as by you parent, to help your child become an independent learner.
Your child finds it difficult to follow directions in class?
Your child finds it difficult to take helpful notes?
Your child finds it difficult to keep up with assigned work?
Your child finds it difficult to keep a calendar for tests and exams?
Your child finds it difficult to outline and summarize what he/she read?
Your child finds it difficult to plan and develop a class project?
Your child finds it difficult to review class and reading notes?
Your child finds it difficult to prepare for an exam?
Organizational and study skills are a group of life skills essential for your child's learning in school and university that includes:
Preparing to learn which encompasses both physical (environment, tools) and mental (attitudes, goals, priorities) aspects.
Acquiring, processing, and retaining information which encompasses good library and Internet skills, effective reading, effective listening, taking good notes, outlining and summarizing, using memory aids, and using graphic organizers, etc.
Applying what has been learned encompasses application of what was learnt in written assignments, oral presentations and tests. Successful test-taking requires both content knowledge (understanding of the material being covered) and procedural knowledge (how to take tests).
Monitoring and evaluating strategy use and learning encompasses self-monitoring where the student assesses strategies used and designated goals.
Those sessions are preceded with a holistic gathering of data and assessment to identify the student's specific need where an individualized plan is developed to tackle his/her strengths and weaknesses.
