Sagamore Hill monitors real-time solar radio interference with space weather data supporting national agencies and DoD operators, warfighters, and decision makers.Black Meteorologists in WWII and Their 21st Century LegacyAccurate weather forecasts were critical for the successful planning and execution of military flying missions during World War II. In July 1940, the Army had only 62 qualified weather forecasters, primarily in the Air Corps. The rapid projected growth of the Air Corps required a growing number of weather officers, at one point estimated at as many as 10,000, with another 20,000 enlisted observers and forecasters. To meet the demand, training courses were developed at several leading universities to "mass produce" weather officers: MIT, Caltech, NYU, University of Chicago and University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA).LTC (Ret.) Dr. Milton M. "Hoppy" Hopkins, Jr. started off his 22 year military career by joining the Professional Certificate in Meteorology Program from UCLA in July 1942. In May 1942, he had earned a B.S. in Physics at Xavier University in New Orleans, Louisiana. As a Weather Forecaster and Staff Weather Officer for the 100th Fighter Squadron of the 332nd Fighter Group, he was stationede at Capodichino Air Base near Naples, Italy. His duties included briefing the crews on target and en-route weather, based on information provided by the base weather station. Milton Hopkins also periodically augmented the base weather station. He was one of 14 Tuskegee Airmen meteorologists.Dr. Hopkins was a passionate science educator. He enjoyed making science, including weather science, accessible to everyone at the Cambridge Rindge and Latin School in Cambridge, Massachusetts. The event will be moderated by MSgt (USAF, Ret) Martin Lewis of Bedford, MA.Tuskegee Airmen of Massachusetts - Willie Shellman, President, New England Chapter, TAIMeteorologist LtCol Dr. Milton M.
