- **Event Description**: Continuing our intentions of hosting programs aligned with solstices and equinoxes, we're celebrating the summer solstice together with a campout and stargazing!  Come for the whole evening or just the star gazing!  Members of the Observatory Docent team will be with us to observe the skies, and our history team and local historians will be there to help us explore connecting themes of sky navigation in honor of Juneteenth.  

The Director of Belk Observatory is partnering with us for this event, and the Claytor Director  has allowed us to reserve the Sumerlin Summit surrounding field for the camping experience.

Friday 6/19----
5p - campers arrive at Belk Observatory for tent/camp load-in (FYI, no fires permitted at Observatory area)
7p - Cemetery walk and discussion about Cloverlea History Project with families in the pre-Civil War era. 
8p - Behind the scenes set up at Belk Observatory (optional sunset walk at that time as well)
9p - Stargazing at Belk Observatory with discussion about sky navigation, using the 'Drinking Gourd' to find and follow the north star in honor of Juneteenth, and discussions of Summer Solstice.  Guests will view through various astronomical equipment at different night sky targets.  
10:30p stargazing program ends, but campers stay overnight

More details with driving instructions and expectations will be sent to registrants!

We will still host the event with cloudy weather.  In the event of heavy rain or other inclement weather, the event will be cancelled.
