As a translational research program funded by the NHMRC and the federal government, Australian Genomics has been key in generating the evidence for the clinical utility and cost-effectiveness of genomic technologies across a range of clinical indications, paving the way for implementation in the Australian healthcare system.Taking a national collaborative approach, Australian Genomics has supported the translation of research evidence into policy and practice and has driven change and growth through broad engagement with consumers, government, industry and global genomics initiatives,In this presentation, I will reflect on the decade since the establishment of Australian Genomics in 2016 and explore the evolving priorities and activities in the context of the growth and change in the sector. I will also highlight the key achievements and outcomes of Australian Genomics, nationally and internationally and its evolution into a national agency on July 1 2025.Following the discussion, there will be an opportunity for audience questions.If you wish to attend the Chalmers Oration in person, please select the first ticket option when registering. Online attendance can be selected in the second ticket option.Professor Kathryn North ACProfessor Kathryn North AC, BSc(Med) MBBS MD DMedSc FRACP FAHMS is the Director of the Murdoch Children’s Research Institute (MCRI) and the David Danks Professor of Child Health Research, University of Melbourne. She is a clinician-scientist, trained as a paediatrician, neurologist and geneticist, leading a diverse team of over 1500 MCRI researchers, with a dedicated focus to improve the health and wellbeing of children and their families.Kathryn is a national and global leader in genomic medicine. She led Australian Genomics (2016-2025), a network of over 100 institutions around Australia, with the goal of embedding genomic medicine in the Australian health system. She is Vice Chair of the Global Alliance for Genomics and Health, a collaborative network across 100 countries, focussed on the responsible sharing of clinical and genomic data. In 2019 she was awarded one of Australia’s highest honours, Companion (AC) of the Order of Australia, in recognition of her eminent service to genomic medicine.Kathryn is Chair of Great Ormond Street Institute of Child Health (UK) International Advisory Board and is a member of the Scientific Advisory Boards of the Singapore National Precision Medicine Program and Toronto Sick Kids Research Institute.About the Chalmers OrationThe annual Chalmers Oration commemorates the work of John Chalmers AC who was the first Professor of Medicine (1975-1996) at the Flinders Medical Centre and the College of Medicine and Public Health.During his time at Flinders and subsequently, John has had a significant presence on the medical stage in Australia, particularly in relation to medical research.
