Restoring Balance: A Hands-On Forest Habitat Project

Join Trevor Tochydlowski of the Wayne Conservation District and Michael Antonishak of the PA DCNR for the next chapter in our Bugs, Balance, and Biodiversity series with a hands-on volunteer opportunity focused on restoring vital shrubland habitat at the Van Scott Nature Reserve. Dense shrub thickets, such as those made of highbush blueberry and cinnamon fern, play a critical role in supporting birds, mammals, reptiles, amphibians, insects, and other wildlife. Unfortunately, these habitats are shrinking due to canopy encroachment (other trees that shade them out), invasive plants, and over browsing by deer.

As we plant native shrubs, participants will learn about forest understory health, shrubland wildlife habitat, and how shade, invasive species, and deer browsing contribute to habitat loss. Trevor and Michael will also provide insight into why active management is necessary to maintain biodiversity and resilience in our forests.

This task involves the navigation of dense brush on mostly level ground. Volunteers must be comfortable using shovels provided by the Reserve to dig holes. Work gloves provided.
