SHOW SYNOPSIS
A group of elderly residents in a senior living community spend their time reminiscing on old times while connecting through music. With humor and poignant moments, they explore themes of friendship, passion, regret, and hope as they continue on the journey of life in their later years together.

FROM THE DIRECTOR
A Jukebox for the Algonquin by Paul Stroili is an ensemble show with plenty of opportunities for cast members to “have a bit of their own” as the Brits might say. Based on the playwright’s experience as a young man working at an upstate New York senior facility, it is in part homage to the people he worked with, part recitation of the eventualities of aging, and part fun plot line involving, as Stroili says, “sex, drugs, and rocking chairs.”
Auditions are 7:00 pm August 3-4 at Bay City Players, 1214 Columbus Avenue, Bay City. First table read for the cast will be Wednesday, August 6 at 6:00 pm. For information about scripts, call the theatre at 989 893-5555.
Please Note: There is a four-week break between the table read and the first blocking rehearsal. This is a purposeful interlude to allow the cast to memorize their parts. The goal is to have that chore behind us when we begin rehearsals. While perfection is not expected day one, by the end of the six scheduled blocking rehearsals, we should be off book.

CHARACTER BREAKDOWN
Mrs. McDarren: Female (can be dual role – same actor could also play Peg)-Her appearance is short-lived. She’s the sort of person who seems just a bit removed from “others.” She’s there scouting a place for her mother.
Annie: Female, 65+, White-A plucky, mouthy, mischief-maker. She sometimes pretends to be an employee, you know, just to stir things up a bit. Very poor vision.
Josephina (ho-seh-fee-nah): Female, 40s-50s. Hispanic/Italian descent ̶ Kind, efficient, typically rushed administrator. She lives her job intensely.
Dennis: Male, 65+ (any ethnicity)-Johnny’s buddy and support system. Feisty, funny, wheelchair bound. Has a deeper persona than his witty conversation would indicate.
Johnny: Male, 65+ (African American)-Looking to relive some treasured memories, in part through the acquisition of said jukebox. Prefers the old school sound of vinyl. Has a “dream scene” in which he plays his significantly younger self.
Chuck: Male, 40s-50s, (any ethnicity) -Maintenance guy with a vibe that says, “there’s something deeper here.” Wasn’t always a “dust mop guy.”
Peg: Female, mid to late 50s. (can be a dual role; same actor can also play Mrs. McDarren – any ethnicity)-The newest resident. From her “indie” living space comes a possible answer to Johnny’s fundraising issues. Recently divorced. Adjusting to solo living.
Tyler: Male, early 20s, (any ethnicity)-The youngest cast member. He gets along well with the more senior folks, teasing and joking. Always carrying his IPOD while doing his housekeeping chores.
