- **Event Description**: One eye, two worlds: discover how a remarkable fish reveals the secrets of vision and evolution.About this EventLSU researcher Patricia Schneider’s lab uses Anableps as a powerful and fascinating research model to explore how new traits develop and evolve. This unique fish has a partially duplicated eye that allows it to see both above and below the water’s surface at the same time, all through a single optic nerve. The Schneider Lab combines developmental biology, morphology, and genomics to understand how evolution shapes the structure and function of the vertebrate eye, and how the brain brings this dual visual information together into one seamless view of the world.About the SpeakerPatricia Schneider is an assistant professor at LSU. She earned her undergraduate degree in biology from the Federal University of Pará in Brazil, completed her Ph.D. in genetics at the University of Iowa, and pursued postdoctoral training at both the University of Chicago and Northwestern University in Chicago, IL. She joined the LSU Department of Biological Sciences in the spring of 2022. Since then, her research has explored the evolutionary innovations of visual systems, with a special focus on the remarkable four-eyed fish, Anableps .LSU Science Café is presented in partnership with Campus Federal Credit Union and WRKF.Registration & Attendance InformationThe event is open to the public, and advance registration through Eventbrite is recommended.LSU Science Café is in-person only (i.e., no live feed) but will be recorded and posted on our YouTube channel.Please print your registration ticket or have it readily available on your electronic device upon arrival.Doors open at 5 PM.
