Over the years, I have lost count of how many parents have told me, "My child finally found his/her people."

As a band director, that may be the most meaningful compliment I receive. They are not talking about a concert rating or a trophy. They are talking about a place where their child feels accepted, challenged, and valued.

After more than two decades of teaching, I also hear from former students who are now in their 40s—yeah, that makes me feel old—who talk about the friendships they built, the confidence they discovered, the discipline they developed, and the moments they were pushed just beyond what they thought they were capable of.

Those conversations remind me that the value of band—and all of the arts—cannot always be measured on a standardized test or captured in a spreadsheet.

It is measured years later, when adults still point to those experiences as the place where they found purpose, resilience, and community.

For the kids arriving at band camp next week, it won't feel that profound. They'll be learning notes, finding their dots, getting to rehearsal on time to avoid laps, working as hard as the person to their left and right, and trying their best not to end up on Boss's radar.

But that's the beauty of it. Those little moments become something much bigger. They become confidence. They become leadership. They become lifelong friendships. They become memories these students will still be talking about 20 or 30 years from now.

I know... that's a pretty deep post for inviting you to a community performance. But sometimes it's important to remember that what these students are building is about much more than a halftime show.

So, I'd like to personally invite our entire CHS and SJA community to join us for our Community Performance on Friday, July 24.

Doors open at 7:00 p.m. in the CHS Gym, with the Bruinettes and Bruin Band taking the field at 8:00 p.m. Weather permitting, the performance will be held on the football field.

Come cheer on these incredible students. You won't just be watching a performance—you'll be witnessing young people finding their people.
