It stars Fernanda Torres and Fernanda Montenegro as Eunice Paiva, a mother and activist coping with the forced disappearance of her husband, the dissident politician Rubens Paiva (Selton Mello), during the military dictatorship in Brazil.The film had its world premiere on 1 September 2024 at the 81st Venice International Film Festival, where it received critical acclaim with widespread praise for Torres' performance, and won the Best Screenplay award. It was named one of the Top 5 International Films of 2024 by the National Board of Review. At the 82nd Golden Globe Awards, Torres won the Best Actress in a Motion Picture – Drama award while the film was nominated for Best Foreign Language Film, a category in which it was also nominated at the Critics' Choice Movie Awards and the BAFTA. At the 97th Academy Awards, the film was nominated for Best Actress (Torres) and Best Picture, and won Best International Feature Film, becoming the first-ever Brazilian-produced film to win an Academy Award.
