The Diamond Wind Ensemble will present the third concert of its inaugural season at 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 22, in Sloan Auditorium in the Brown Fine Arts Building on the campus of Lyon College, 2300 Highland Rd., Batesville.
Admission is free and open to the public.
John Christian, director of bands at Lyon College and conductor of the ensemble, said he is proud of the group’s progress during its first season.
“I love being their conductor,” Christian said. “I am so proud of the growth of our ensemble in just six short months. We have some of the finest players in the area. We open our rehearsals for community members, students and directors from area high schools. It’s a special group of people.”
The program will feature a wide-ranging repertoire, from classical wind literature to contemporary works.
Highlights include compositions by Samuel Hazo and Shelly Hanson, reflecting musical influences from Asia and the Balkans with “Fantasy on a Japanese Folk Song” and “Albanian Dance.”
The concert will also include a French symphony, “Five Little Songs” by two-time Pulitzer Prize winner Walter Piston, and “The Directorate” by march composer John Philip Sousa.
