- **Event Name**: Hike to Prince Walker Burial Ground and Homesite
- **Event Start and End Date**: Sun, 28 Jun, 2026 at 10:45 am
- **Event Description**: As part of the Barre Historical Society’s focus on the Ware River Watershed in its 100th anniversary year, we will lead a hike to the Prince Walker Burial Ground and Homesite. This event is co-sponsored by the Barre Historical Society and Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR). Lucy Allen, Historian of the Barre Historical Society, and Nancy Huntington, Program Coordinator at DCR, will lead visitors on a hike to one of the only African-American burial grounds in Central Massachusetts. The Burial Ground is located in a remote area off Gilbert Road in Barre, deep within the Ware River Watershed. Visitors will learn of the amazing life of Prince Walker, who was born enslaved in Barre in 1774, and was sold into slavery in Connecticut when he was 9 years old. When he was 21, he escaped back to Barre. Here he purchased land, farmed, married, had a family, and created this small burial ground for his family members. It is his final resting place. Visitors will also be introduced to the history of the Ware River Watershed and how it is managed. Because there is no address or signage for this location, we ask those who are interested to meet at the Barre Historical Society at 10:45 AM on June 28. At 11:00, we will carpool to the location of the hike. Please wear shoes appropriate for a rugged walk uphill. In case of severe weather, the hike will be rescheduled.
