Sarah was born and raised in Gloucestershire. She attended Dean Close School as a Major Music Scholar and learnt the flute under Nicky King (DCS) and Kate Hill (English Chamber Orchestra). Sarah played with the National Children’s Orchestra and then the National Youth Orchestra. She was also principal flute of the Gloucestershire Youth Orchestra.
Sarah went on to study at the Guildhall School of Music (GSMD) and learned with Edward Beckett, Sarah Newbold and Paul Edmund-Davis. During this time, Sarah also won Gloucestershire Young Musician of the Year, 1994. Sarah earned a distinction in her final recital. After completing her degree and Post Diploma in Orchestral Training, Sarah embarked on a career as a freelance flautist and teacher. She played with the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra and the Hallé Orchestra as well as giving recitals (many with Caroline) and performing concertos. She held teaching posts at Woldingham School, Cumnor House School and Notting Hill Preparatory School. Sarah continued her affiliation with the National Children’s Orchestra by working first as a member of social staff and then as a woodwind tutor. She also spent a time teaching for Gloucester Academy of Music and Performing Arts (now GAM) and Beauchamp Music Centre.
Sarah won a scholarship in 1998 to study at the Banff Centre for the Arts in Canada. There she collaborated and performed with musicians from around the world, helped to give workshops in schools and tutored musicians from the local youth orchestra. She took part in innovative performances and recordings of contemporary works written by the composers in residence.
In 2004, Sarah completed a Certificate in Music, Worship and Theology gaining a Distinction and went on to take a Worship and Music Leader role at St Michael’s Church in London where she worked part time alongside her freelance teaching and playing.
Sarah married in 2005 and with plans to start a family, decided to qualify as a classroom Music Teacher. She worked at Hendon School, Lady Eleanor Holles and as acting Director of Music for two terms at Kensington Prep School. Sarah and her family then moved to Oxfordshire and Sarah worked as a teacher at Headington Prep School where she taught for two years before moving Gloucestershire where they now live. Sarah continues to play but she now also home educates her two (very!) lively children Esmé (10) and Jonah (6). She has never worked so hard in her life!!
