This is a skills-focused development day aimed at building confidence, control, and decision-making in dynamic coastal environments.

Using the stretch of coastline from Croyde Bay across to Ilfracombe, we’ll make the most of the venues available on the day. This area offers a wide range of options—surf beaches, gullies, small tide races, and rock hopping—and we’ll pick and choose locations based on the conditions, the group, and what you want to get out of the session. If the weather is less favourable, there are alternative venues within the wider area to keep the day productive.
The emphasis is on developing your ability to move confidently and efficiently around rocks. We’ll look at boat control, positioning, timing, and decision-making, helping you feel more at ease in environments that can often feel committing.

Alongside this, we’ll work on key safety and support skills in context. This includes rolling, re-entry rolls, back deck scrambles, assisted rescues, scoops, towing systems, and incident management. Rather than isolating these skills, we’ll aim to apply them in real situations, so they become more instinctive and useful when it matters.

There will be plenty of opportunities to practise rolling in more committing environments, where it really counts. This often leads to naturally occurring rescue scenarios, giving you the chance to problem-solve, support others, and build confidence under a bit more pressure.
The overall aim is to leave you feeling more capable—not just in your own paddling, but as part of a group operating in these environments.

This course is aimed at confident paddlers with their own boat and equipment who are comfortable operating in up to Force 4 sea states, and who want to develop their skills in more dynamic, rock-based coastal settings. 

The day runs from 9:30am to around 4pm, with a relaxed beach stop for lunch.
