Outreach: Working with the Mental Capacity Act


“The Mental Capacity Act 2005 provides a statutory framework for people who lack capacity to make decision for themselves, or who have capacity and want to make preparations for a time when they may lack capacity in the future. It sets out who can take decisions, in which situations and how they should go about this” (Department of Constitutional Affairs, 2007).

This session will enable the attendee to understand, recognise and know how to use the Mental Capacity Code of Practice.  

Skills learned in this session empower the healthcare professional to keep the individual at the centre of their practice, fulfilling their duty of care and is relevant to all settings.

Aims:



To understand our duty of care under the Mental Capacity Act (2005) and code of conduct.



Understanding the five statutory principles behind the Act and the way they affect how it’s put in practice. 



To understand what the Act means by acting in the best interests of someone lacking capacity to make a decision for themselves, and describes the checklist set out in the Act for working out what is in someone’s best interest.



To understand how the Mental Capacity Act, advance care planning and consent are connected.



Entry requirements: There are no prerequisites for this course. This course is designed for the non-registered workforce.Time: Registration from 12.45pm. Course runs 1 – 4.30 pm

Do I have to bring my printed ticket to the event? No

Is it ok if the name on my ticket or registration doesn't match the person who attends? Yes

What if I want to cancel?  If you wish to cancel your booking you will need to give 5 working days notice, as per our booking terms and conditions. Failure to give 5 working days notice or non-attendance will incur a £25 fee per person to cover administration costs, unfortunately as we are a charity this fee is non-negotiable.

Is my registration fee or ticket transferrable? You can transfer your ticket to another person or to another event, please see full terms and conditions on our website.
